DIF&W Podcasts are Great

November 16, 2020Advice, Dept of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife News
By George Smith

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is doing a great job with their podcasts. I’ve posted columns about some of them, but you should check all of them out. DIF&W’s Katie Yates, who joined the department 2 years ago, and whose job is to recruit more hunters and anglers, thought podcasts would be a […]

River Voices – Perspectives on the Presumpscot

November 13, 2020Book Reviews, Environmental Issues, Fishing, History, Maine
By George Smith

After you read this book, you’ll be headed to the beautiful Presumpscot River. Robert Sanford and William Plumley did a great job recruiting a lot of impressive people to write each chapter in River Voices – Perspectives on the Presumpscot published by North Country Press. Each writer must have done a lot of research for […]

Hubbard’s (Great) Guide to Moosehead Lake and Northern Maine

November 9, 2020Book Reviews, Fishing, History, Maine Woods
By George Smith

I’ve got to thank Tommy Carbone for republishing Hubbard’s Guide to Moosehead Lake and Northern Maine. It’s an amazing book by Lucius Hubbard, first published in 1879. Hubbard updated and republished the book 4 times. Hubbard really knew Maine’s north woods and his book features his hikes and paddles throughout the north woods. Thankfully, our […]

Swimming for my big buck

November 6, 2020Hunting, Maine Woods, Wildlife
By George Smith

This is one of my favorite deer hunting stories. This mistake had a happy ending. For years I had a favorite spot in woods near the far corner of a small local pond. I could sit inside a rock formation and the deer had only a narrow pathway to go past me along the shore. […]

Laurie Chandler’s amazing hiking and paddling adventure

November 2, 2020Book Reviews, Hiking, Life, Maine Woods
By George Smith

Through Woods & Waters by Laurie Apgar Chandler tells us all about her amazing adventures hiking and paddling through Maine’s north woods, including the national monument just west and north of Baxter Park. I spent time in a lot of the places Laurie hiked, and I fished in a lot of the waters she paddled, […]

The Natural Resources Council of Maine has recognized four people for their contributions to conservation. I was particularly pleased that one of them is my friend Cathy Johnson, who did a great job for all of us who love Maine. Here’s the list of the winners. Aram Calhoun, Conservation Leadership Award, for providing her expertise and leadership […]
