Great outdoor adventures at Claybrook Mountain Lodge

Claybrook Mountain Lodge features great outdoor adventures, very comfortable rooms, and fantastic meals – everything you need for a wonderful get-a-way.

Linda and I have been enjoying one of Greg and Pat Drummond’s May birding weekends for several years now. Our friend Ron Joseph, a retired wildlife biologist, is our birding guide, and Ron’s enthusiasm is infectious. This year we saw 98 species of birds.

But I’d go even if we saw no birds, to enjoy Pat’s fantastic meals. For many years, Pat was the cook at Cobb’s Pierce Pond Camps, while Greg was a guide there. Then they built an 8 bedroom lodge next to their house in Highland Plantation, east of Kingfield.

They are open year-round and are especially popular with cross country skiers in the winter. On our first visit, we were impressed with the wide variety of habitats in that area, one of the reasons we see so many birds. From farms to bogs to forests and lakes and ponds, there’s something for all Maine birds – and birders.

Even though my legs are quite weak now and I can’t walk far, I was able to enjoy the weekend using a walker which includes a seat so I could stop and sit to enjoy the birds.

You can learn more about Claybrook at www.claybrookmountainlodge.com. Check it out and schedule a great get-a-way sometime soon. A lot of those birds are still there. And I didn’t even mention the great fishing in that area!
