Thoreau photo exhibit now available statewide

Thoreau exhibit oneScot Miller’s wonderful photo exhibit about Thoreau’s Maine woods adventures is now available for display throughout the state. Perhaps you know of a place in your area that would like to host this exhibit. Here’s the message I got recently from Scott.

Scot’s Message

I am trying to get the word out about a unique opportunity for Maine venues to exhibit a quality Maine Woods-themed photography exhibition for minimal cost and thought I’d let you know about it in case you have any ideas about people/places that might be interested.

Here are the details…

Thanks to the generosity of the Harvard Museum of Natural History, the “Thoreau’s Maine Woods: A Journey in Photographs with Scot Miller” exhibition is available for minimal cost to Maine arts, educational and museum venues. After being featured at Harvard from November 2013 through February 2015, the exhibition traveled to the University of Maine at Orono, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, and is currently on display at the University of Maine at Fort Kent’s Blake Library and the Acadian Archives/Archives Acadiennes from February 9 through March 25.

This is the second time I have partnered with the Harvard museum to create a traveling exhibit. Janis Sacco, Director of Exhibitions at the Harvard Museums of Science and Culture, organized the interpretive graphics and thirty-three of my photographs around Henry David Thoreau’s three mid-19th century expeditions to northern Maine chronicled in his three essays featured in his American classic book, The Maine Woods: Ktaadn, Chesuncook, and Allagash & East Branch. The photographs are all from Thoreau, The Maine Woods: A Photographic Journey Through an American Wilderness, published in 2013 by Levenger Press.

I encourage other Maine venues to take advantage of Harvard’s generosity to display the “Thoreau’s Maine Woods” exhibition. If interested, contact me and I will put you in touch with Janis Sacco at the Harvard museum. Please share this with others who you think might be interested.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION…

This exhibition is basically being offered for free. It is my understanding that the only costs involved for qualifying venues are transportation/delivery and possibly insurance. There may some lighting requirements as well. Janis Sacco at the Harvard museum can confirm the details.

This is opportunity is open to all of Maine, not just the north woods.

Thoreau exhibit twoIt was rewarding to meet and talk with both students and area residents, to see their reactions, and to hear their positive feedback about the exhibition and love for the Maine Woods. You can also view a short video on my Facebook page.

Here is a link to a review of the exhibition when it was at Harvard, by the Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning photography critic:

All of the photographs and interpretive panels from the original exhibition are part of the Maine traveling exhibition. Interpretive panels deal with Thoreau’s three Maine Woods trips, his experiences with the Penobscot guides, his work as a naturalist, and more. The exhibition is educational and inspirational for all ages. If someone would like to know more about the exhibition and how it has been received in Maine, they can contact Heather Sincavage with UMPI.

I’d love to extend the exhibition’s run in Maine beyond Fort Kent and your help in getting the word out about the opportunity will be much appreciated. The subject matter can’t be beat! Feel free to contact me with any questions or send other people my way. Thank you for your consideration.
